rules of expansion

I’ve stopped expanding.

That’s a good thing.

The slow process of contraction has commenced. That’s a good thing too- although the speed, or lack thereof, is frustrating.

It’s only been in the last couple of weeks- in fact, it’s only been since:

  • I threw away the goals
  • Jupiter turned retrograde.

Jupiter is the great expander. His role is to make things bigger. That’s great when the thing that is being made bigger is a good idea, a great opportunity, a small windfall. It’s not so great when the things being made bigger are: a bad idea, a small problem, your body.

If we don’t take the opportunities for expansion offered by Jupiter, we tend to carry the weight of that missed expansion to the scales as a physical weight. You know the sort of thing- the coulda, woulda, shouldas.

This is especially the case if you are Pisces, Sagittarius, or have lots of planets in these signs. It’s also true, at present, for Gemini.

When Jupiter turns retrograde* the expansion stops.

Sometimes growth gets out of control, the momentum is too much, and energy goes where it may not be doing the most good. In some cases, we consume additional energy as a result. In some cases, this becomes the excuse for not pursuing our dreams. For whatever reason, we don’t have the courage to open an unfamiliar door, so we open a fridge door instead.

Along comes the retrograde. This gives us a few months to stop and take stock before moving forward again. We have to do this to reach our full potential. This is frustrating for those of us who might feel that we’re this close to a breakthrough, but good news for those of us who are having problems fastening our jeans.

Yet, over the last couple of days, I have had a few people approach me concerned that since Jupiter has turned retrograde they have put on weight. None of these are people who I would say would normally be that influenced by Jupiter transits.

The first thing I would ask is:

Are you trying to push forward with something that needs to be slowed or let go for now?

Is the resultant frustration turning you in the direction of the fridge?

The next thing would be:

Is there internal work that needs to be done?

Is there something that needs to be finished? Is there emotional clutter that is weighing you down? Are there habits that will be an excuse for you not to move forward when the time is right?

The photo (below) was posted on a Facebook page this morning. I think that says it all.

*when a planet is retrograde it isn’t really going backwards, it’s movement has simply slowed, relative to that of the Earth, so that it appears to be moving in a retrograde motion.

  1. I am Pisces rising 18 degrees with Mars retrograde at Pisces 22 degrees. I have weight issues yet have a lot of energy too. I am that atypical Virgo currently overweight with a messy home. I can relate to much of what you typed. If I am “in control” then my place is spotless. But with the weight gain comes disappointment in myself and then my place isn’t as clean. (I have Virgo Sun, Jupiter in Virgo and Mercury in Virgo with Aries moon and Venus in Cancer. For a short tubby thing I walk fast and am always on the move. (Thyroid is fine. I just like food!) I lean toward Hellenistic astrology and am 56 years old. So my Trigon ruler has changed from Mars to Venus and now I have been diagnosed with diabetes. At least that is the inspiration to change my eating habits. I haven’t had sweets and am low on starch intake for several weeks now. Hopefully I can beat the diabetes…..but I can see that the Trigon lord showed the diabetes. I hope to be off diabetic medicines with diet improvement which of course has to be a lifestyle change.
