step away from the fridge…

If your fridge is like mine, it’ll still have left overs in it from Christmas time.

We spent the day at my parents, so our leftover situation isn’t quite as bad as it could be, but there are still plates of sliced ham (that I have a habit of swiping every time I open the door) and those little individual fun size chocolates that seem to swell to the size of a family block when they land on your hips.

The Moon is in Cancer, and will later tonight, be officially full. Combined with a full fridge, and potentially a set of unfulfilled resolutions and insecurities that are also leftover from 2012, this makes today one of the highest danger comfort food days of the year.

The sign of Cancer is ruled by the Moon.

In the body, the sign of Cancer looks after the containers- in particular the breasts, the belly.

The sign of Cancer is associated with mother, but this is no yummy mummy. This is the mother that makes sure that all your practical needs are taken care of- that there is food in your belly, clothes on your back, the homework is done, and that you’re home before it gets dark.

The sign of Cancer is also associated with fears and insecurities. Think about the crab. It approaches life side on, it rarely strays from the security of its home and, when the waves of life come crashing down or predators appear, it disappears back into its shell. That’s Cancer.

When you combine all of these things together, what you have is a situation where a full belly makes you feel safer, or more able to deal with the emotional crap that life throws us. Fears, insecurities and slights (real or perceived) may send you to the fridge for comfort. It’s easier to eat than it is to confront whatever it is that’s lying outside your emotional shell.

People born under the sign of Cancer are particularly prone to this. People born when the Moon was in Cancer are especially prone to this. When the Moon is in Cancer, many more of us will fall into this category.

Right now, today, we are just a couple of days away from the end of the year and the year in review stuff is already happening. Many people will look back and make little fist pumps, many more will look back at missed opportunities, and many more will look back with despair at what wasn’t achieved.

If you’re in the 1st group, take a bow. If you’re in either of the last 2 categories…none of it matters. It’s all so yesterday.

Today, rather than write your goals or resolutions, think about what you’re grateful for. It might have been the absolute shittiest possible year, but at the end of the day, concentrate on those people who’ve been there, who are still there, who have shared your life in some way and be grateful for their warmth.

As for the fears and insecurities? Write them down too. Look at them, dance around them if you must and then flush them away…they’re so last year.
